Nuestro Pueblo- Low Flutes Concerto
Talented composer and conductor Peter Senchuk has written a work for the four main low flutes (alto, bass, contra and subcontra) and extended flute ensemble. The work was composed for Peter Sheridan and the Los Angeles Flute Orchestra, a fine ensemble that boosts more than 8 octaves of flutes! These fine performers premiered the work at the 2010 NFA Convention in Anaheim, CA. In the audience was the low flutes maker, Katsu Kotato, who was impressed by the piece and performance, and invited Mr. Sheridan to premiere the work in Shiga Japan at the 2011 Japan Flute Convention.
The work is set in four contrasting movements and is based around the artisitc work of the Los Angeles based artist Simon Rodia and his magnificent 'Watts Tower.' The extended score has 7 flute parts that double on piccolo to bass flute and independent contra and subcontrabass flute parts as well. A lovely and creative sound is produced by these instruments, and the careful yet daring orchestration of Senchuk is most impressive.
I. Rodia's Journey (contrabass flute solo) is a moody brooding type of music that finds it's energy as the tempo and tesitura increase. The movement finishes with a relection and solo decoration of the opening theme.
II. Along the Tracks (subcontrabass flute), is a an exciting rough dance that unfolds from the floating sound of multiphonics and key clicks. The growling almost agitated subcontrabass flute driving ahead in it's clumsy yet determined manner.
III. 107th Street Waltz (alto flute) is a lively bright dance in 7/8 time that plays with chromatic twists and turns. The brief movement ends as the tempo is pulled back and segues into the Epilogue.
IV. Epilogue (bass flute) is a serene final farewell, that explores gorgeous phrases for the bass flute as the ensemble produces interesting and evocative harmonic colours below. The work ends as the bass flute fades off with a high soft colourful set of hypnotic phrase turns. This of course is similar to the artists life as well.
The work is scheduled to be recorded in Los Angeles during early April 2012.
