Rosiak Bass Flute Concerto
Australian based composer and flutist Michal Rosiak, has announced the beginnings of a new composition for bass flute and strings. Rosiak's lyrical yet demanding compositional style coupled with his tremendous understanding of flute technique (he himself is a fine player) is sure to produce a work that will become a staple of the low flutes repertoire. Rosiak is no stranger to the low flutes, as his quartets and flute ensemble works all have parts of substance composed forthe bass flute
His fun and quirky recent low flutes quartet titled, 'Quasi Latino,' cleared demonstrates the new compositional direction this composer is willing (and more than able) to explore. With highly interactive motion amongst all the parts and virtuosic phrasing throughout, the work truly demonstrates the abilities of these fine flutes.
The new Concerto will present numerous challenges, such as, orchestration, voicing and flexibility. The bass flute though powerful in tonal quality can become covered in more sensitive, quiet and low register passages. The instrument has a surprisingly strong 3rd octave and can sing like a tenor in that tessiturra.
No date of completion has been given, though the low flutes community will eagerly await the arrival of such a composition from one of Australia's most versatile composers.
